Drivers largely approved of the experiment, which tries to improve traffic flow by slowing down vehicles going too fast for the route (a common cause of traffic congestion), and urged that it be expanded to all state highways.

The Abu Dhabi Police General Command has posted speed limits of 140 km/h and 120 km/h on the leftmost lanes of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Road. Reduced speeds help keep everyone on the road safer.

Mohammed Khaled proposed assessing all state highways with the method to fine those who drive too slowly and so contribute to traffic congestion and secondary accidents.

Bura'i Muhammad agreed, saying that he has trouble keeping up with slow-moving vehicles on the roadways and that he always makes an effort to overtake them correctly in order to maintain his pace, comparing them to fixed pebbles that surprise the driver and require overtaking with caution.

Minimum speed fines

After a warning period ends this morning, Abu Dhabi Police will begin arresting drivers and other road users who are going slower than 120 km/h. If your vehicle's speed is lower than the posted limit, you'll have to pay a fine of 400 dirhams.

When an accident or rush hour traffic produced a backup, drivers would request that the radars be turned off to alleviate the situation.

Abu Dhabi Police apply speed limits to increase safety and security

The Abu Dhabi Police Department set the minimum speed in order to increase overall road safety, direct slower cars to stay to the right, and ensure that drivers always yield to vehicles approaching from behind or to the left.

She urged them to stay alert, wait for the traffic ahead to pass before changing lanes, only change lanes if there is enough space to do so, and always signal their lane changes.
