Abu Dhabi has introduced fresh regulations governing the utilization of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in the Emirate, aiming to bolster safety measures and effectively manage drone operations.
Administrative Decision No. 48 of 2024, issued by the Department of Municipalities and Transport in Abu Dhabi (DMT), underscores the importance of regulating civil drone usage.
In addition to ensuring the safe deployment of drones, these new guidelines aim to streamline their management, regulation, and monitoring within Abu Dhabi. The overarching goal is to establish standardized systems and procedures pertaining to drones, ultimately positioning the emirate as a focal point for the burgeoning drone industry. By fostering innovation in aviation and bolstering smart transportation initiatives, these regulations are poised to attract investment in Abu Dhabi’s drone sector.
The scope of the decision encompasses all facets of drone activity within the emirate, spanning design, manufacturing, assembly, modification, inspection, maintenance, and simulation system development, among others. This comprehensive approach applies to both individuals and entities operating within Abu Dhabi, including activities conducted within free zones, barring exemptions specified in the Federal Decree by Law No. 26 of 2022.
The DMT, in assuming various responsibilities outlined in the legislation, is entrusted with oversight, permit issuance, and the establishment of rules governing drone flight conditions. Moreover, the department is tasked with setting standards for take-off and landing sites, as well as devising guidelines for drone-specific infrastructure such as airports and runways, in collaboration with pertinent local and federal authorities.
To further enhance awareness and compliance, the DMT plans to conduct workshops tailored for drone owners and operators. These sessions will elucidate the requisite procedures and criteria governing drone operations within the emirate, aligning with administrative directives, civil aviation regulations, and technical guidelines specific to Abu Dhabi's drone ecosystem.
Through these concerted efforts, Abu Dhabi seeks to foster a conducive environment for the responsible and innovative use of drones, underpinned by robust regulatory frameworks and comprehensive awareness initiatives.
