Canada issues new decision on exemptions to study permit cap and access to PGWP

In order to expedite the visa processing process once the distribution of study permits is approved at the provincial level by late March, IRCC Canada has extended an invitation to colleges and universities to provide feedback on a proposed provision that would shorten the time it takes institutions to validate an admission letter to 10 days.

During a routine town hall meeting to discuss student visa changes, an official confirmed that all territories and provinces have received their quotas from Immigration Minister Mark Miller in letters, but they did not disclose the exact numbers.

As of December, all acceptance letters received in October were had to be confirmed in order to combat fraud.

Concerns about the lack of research permits in time for the May start of the spring cohort have been voiced by a number of stakeholders to IRCC.

Concerns about the lack of research permits in time for the May start of the spring cohort have been voiced by a number of stakeholders to IRCC.

It follows that IRCC is suggesting a plan to do away with the grace period of fifteen days that DLIs have been given to verify acceptance letters.

We suggest cutting the 15 calendar days that officers are now required to wait before processing study permit applications down to the 10 days that were originally anticipated.

"So IRCC officials can begin processing study permit applications [earlier]..." the spokesperson stated, adding that this will also be helpful if there is a surge in applications in April once all procedures are completed.

The deadline for public comments on the plan is February 26.

As public concerns about the policy changes grew, an IRCC official addressed questions sent to the agency following confusion over who was and was not subject to the new two-year temporary restriction.

In the meanwhile, all parties involved are encouraged to engage with National Societies, and more local meetings will be planned.
