Canada: Partial closure of a highway in Toronto to begin repairs until 2027

Several lanes of the Gariner Expressway in the Canadian city of Toronto were closed to begin repairs on the main highway in the city.

This new project is part of a larger plan for the strategic rehabilitation of Toronto's Gardiner Expressway, which will resume this spring.

In a comparable context, the city's official spokeswoman told several media that the next construction work will begin in October 2023, and that preliminary work is already underway.

He stated that work had already been completed on the lower side of the Gardiner Expressway in November, and that by late March 2024, the Gardiner Expressway will be reduced to only two lanes in each direction between Dufferin Street and Strachan Street.

It's worth noting that the second phase of this massive 6-phase project, which was approved by the Toronto City Council between 2014 and 2016, has already begun.

Indeed, the Canadian city of Toronto recently stated that the first phase of the Jarvis and Cherry Streets project will be completed in April 2021, with the second phase set to begin this year.

It is worth noting that several delays have forced the City of Toronto to change the project timeline from 2027 to 2030 more than once, although various officials have lately stated that even this objective may not be met.

According to recent reports, the second phase of the project is expected to last until mid-2027, but at the same time it is also expected to lift restrictions on the lanes for two months during the 2026 World Cup.

A spokesman for the City of Toronto revealed that the city recently controlled the Gardiner Contract from Dufferin Street to Strachan Street, temporarily halting construction work during the impending World Cup activities.

According to prior reports from 2015, City of Toronto authorities indicated that this project will cost around $2.5 billion, and a revised estimate of $3.6 billion was previously submitted to council for assessment in 2016.

It is worth emphasizing that the exact cost of the 2023 agreement for the county to acquire control of the Gardiner and Don Valley Parkways remains unknown, as does the level of government that will finance it.
